"Carnegie Abbey is a tremendous blend of old and new, brought together masterfully by Donald Steel, totally unique to New England but it feels like it has been there forever. You will want to come back."

Front Nine: 7th Hole

Patriots' Stand
395 Yards - Par 4

The historic walls of Freeborn Lane narrow the drive landing area making this a difficult driving hole. The good drive should be up the right on the higher side of the fairway, with an approach down the length of the green and perhaps a glimpse of the green surface.

The drive off to the left will leave a more steeply uphill second, playing across the narrow width of the green, with an up-and-down recovery either from the hollows to the right or the deep swale left of the green far from guaranteed. Once on the green, the putting surface is one of the gentlest on the course.

During the Battle of Rhode Island, British and American forces faced each other across the valley on either side of Freeborn Lane, which crosses the 7th, 8th and 9th holes.

Hessian mercenaries unsuccessfully tried to outflank the American force, which included a regiment of both black and native Americans, who were on Lehigh Hill (beyond the 7th green). The Hessian dead were buried, on the battlefield in a mass grave which came to be known as "Hessians' Hole." A plaque once marked the spot near the 6th green, but over the years it was lost or removed.

The importance of the battleground in the history of the area was such that the design of the course incorporated the Lane and restored the walls on either side. It is an unusual feature, but it is surely right that such a rare feature of national heritage should be retained.
