Back Nine: 14th Hole

Tom's Burn
426 Yards - Par 4

A serpentine stone wall separates the green from the rest of the fairway on the 14th and the key to the tee shot is to find the correct side of the fairway. Under most conditions, this will be to the right of center, leaving a second across the wall and its associated ponds. Straying too far left will result in playing towards the trouble, rather than over and away from it.

The undulations on the apron of the green may make judgement of the distance difficult, a factor to be taken into account during club selection. The green is also 40 yards long, so the flag position will have considerable influence as well.

The railroad between the Golf House and the lst tee is hardly used nowadays, but was once the main route between Boston and Newport.

"The Old Colony Railroad" opened in 1860 and carried freight and passengers up into the 1930's, taking its last passenger traffic during World War II when it ferried troops to and from the naval bases on the island.
